Bryan and Gen meet at Garde Manger. Dancing and drinks ensued.
Through mutual friends, they expressed interest in one another,
but due to poor timing, a date never materializes.
A year later, Bryan and Gen finally get their act together. Serendipitously, some
mutual friends plan a weekend getaway to a cottage up north. Not so
serendipitously, the friends drop out, one by one, leaving Bryan and Gen to
their own devices. Plan B emerges.
After a few false starts, Gen and Bryan head to a Habs game for their first date.
Montreal’s beloved Canadiens win 3-1 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
The soiree continues at Garde Manger, and eventually, chez Bryan,
where Gen meets the inimitable Deigan for the first time.
Sparks fly.
Gen and her cats (temporarily) move to Old Montreal to watch Deigan while
Bryan travels between Los Angeles and Montreal. Presumably, it goes well
because – spoiler alert! – they’re still together.
Gen and Bryan ring in the new year together at Le Club Chasse et Peche.
Good friends, great food, and guiltless wine – a consistent theme for them.
Despite almost missing their 6 AM flight, Bryan and Gen head to New York
for a Hot Chip + The XX concert, and very spicy Malaysian fare.
Either the Malaysian food was unbeatable or they really like Rafael Nadal:
Labor Day weekend finds the couple back in New York where they attend
the US open for the first time. It certainly won't be the last.
The couple is invited to a tasting at a friend’s cellar, where Gen is encouraged to
select a wine. She inadvertently chooses a Grand Cru Bordeaux simply because there
were “a lot of duplicates.” From that point forward, she vows only to drink
mature, classified growth.
Bryan and Gen temporarily relocate to Tremblant whilst renovations are
underway on their first home. Four months later, they head back
to Old Montreal, proud of the work they’ve done.
Bryan and Gen head to Paris and Barcelona.
Presumably, there’s wine. Lots of wine.
Out with Old Montreal and in with Magnificent Mile Ex.
A new home in one of the city’s most sought-after neighborhoods
underscores a successful chapter in life, work and love.
Bryan injures himself while playing flag football, and is forced to
undergo surgery on his knee. Gen nurses him back to health over
the course of the summer.
You know the one. Yes. No. Yes. No. Absolutely not. Never. Well, maybe.
We’ll see. I guess they’re kind of cute. Okay. Mhmm. Is the timing right?
Is the timing ever right? Oh God, there’s a screaming baby on this flight – no.
NO! No. But aren’t we ready? Yes. Should we just try and see what happens?
Gen turns 34. Also: she’s pregnant.
In an effort to re-capture their lost summer, the Mahoney-Pelletiers head
to Santa Barbara to escape the harshest winter months. While there,
Bryan makes good on his promise, and Deigan swims in the ocean for 10
minutes of pure bliss. Unfortunately, a wave hits him awkwardly,
and D will require surgery to repair his one good leg.
Gen and Bryan head to Washington DC and New York City before the
arrival of their daughter. For some reason, they decide to stay in
Williamsburg this time – never once venturing into Manhattan.
Little did they know…
Chloe couldn’t wait. She’s born six pounds, one ounce and four weeks early.
Bryan and Gen become parents to a perfect baby girl.
The newly-minted family return to NYC for the US Open.
Chloe attends her first tennis match.
Bryan and Gen head to France with Chloe in tow – presumably on an
undercover mission capture the world's most picturesque family
portraits. Mission accomplished.
Bryan and Gen spend Easter in New York City. By this point, one can
only assume that customs officials are growing weary about their
unhealthy pre-occupation with Malaysian food and Rafael Nadal.
Jokes aside – life is about to change in a big way.
Bryan accepts a job in New York, eager to take the helm as Glossier’s first
vice-president of engineering. The family prepares for their next great adventure.
In a chapter that might otherwise be titled, “We’re moving to NYC. Holy shit,
we’re moving to NYC,” Bryan and Gen find a home in Williamsburg after
a whirlwind weekend of apartment hunting.
Together, Bryan and Gen try rings while on a trip to London.
A whirlwind weekend finds the couple in the heart of Manhattan.
Bryan proposes to Gen with a custom-made ring against the backdrop of the
city that never sleeps. Their families join them the next day for a weekend of
celebration, punctuated by an intimate wedding ceremony at city hall.
Bryan and Gen are settling into their life in New York City; a home in Brooklyn,
weekends spent exploring the cafes, bakeries and wine bars, weekend getaways to
the Hamptons and Hudson Valley – notably, Cold Spring. Of course, we wouldn’t be
talking about the Mahoneys unless we mentioned attending the US Open, too.
A big move is upon the family yet again – from South 1st to Withers Street.
With the woes of immigration stress behind them, they become homeowners
once again in their adopted homeland. With this, they sell their home in
Montreal to formally begin their next chapter.
The family finds themselves in San Francisco in June; an exercise in mixing
business with pleasure. While there, they decide to stop by Scribe, having met
the owners a few months earlier at a wine dinner. Though the vineyard was fully
booked for the day, the winery graciously squeezed them in after the couple promised
it would only be a quick tasting. They left three hours later, with a taste for the terroir
and the appetite to plan a wedding.
Before the trip to Scribe, the pair had more-or-less written off the idea of a wedding,
but after seeing Scribe’s lush landscape, they couldn’t resist. In October, they
exchanged vows surrounded by close friends and family. Glasses clinked, sparks flew –
and unfortunately – the guests were evacuated hours later in the wake of
California’s devastating wildfires.
Beloved Lucy gets sick. Bryan and Gen take her to the vet, and eventually,
decide to operate – eventually discovering that the cancer has
spread throughout her stomach.
Cancer gets the best of Lucy, the only fight in her life she didn’t win; it comes
as a heart-wrenching surprise that Deigan outlives her – but not for long.
In June, Deigan breathes his last breath on the first day of his 16th year.
“When Lucy dies, does that mean we can get a cat,” the four-year-old Chloe asks.
As heartbroken as she is about losing Lucy, she is eager to bring a new friend into the fold.
Gen and Chloe visited a shelter twice before coming home with Stella – a beautiful,
black furball who is the spitting image of Rocky, a little cat that Gen adored.
The year is filled with exciting travels – a February escape to Mexico, a visit to
Santa Barbara, exploring Iceland and living the good life in Sicily. It is a good
moment for the Mahoneys to catch a breath after a year of loss. Perhaps it’s also
the right time to think about what comes next.
After a few years leading the technology helm at Glossier, the adventure
begins to wind down. Life in one of North America’s fastest-growing startups
means the Mahoneys have largely been moving at a breakneck pace
for four years. Gen and Bryan set their sights on new adventures,
this time, entirely on their own terms.
Bryan’s tenure as an entrepreneur makes a reappearance in his next act – ARFA.
Somewhat surprisingly, the more risk-averse Gen is the one who pushes Bryan
to take the leap of faith. There are ups and downs as the family adjusts once
more to the time and attention that a growing company demands.
After a long and storied friendship with Justin Willett, one of the country’s most talented
winemakers, Bryan and Gen officially become partners in Lieu Dit. In some ways, it feels
like this was written in the stars – while Gen is pregnant with Chloe, the pair drive across
the country and fall in love with Santa Barbara, serendipitously stopping at
Justin’s other vineyard, Tyler Winery – home to Justin's eponymous Tyler, and
coincidentally, the winery where Lieu Dit is crafted. Years later, they become
more acquainted with Justin over a killer bottle of Ravenneau. The partnership in
Lieu Dit is the final push that Gen needs to go back to school.
Gen is a sommelier. Leading up to her certification, she studies relentlessly, produces
hundreds of flash cards and graduates at the top of her class. With the investment
in Lieu Dit, Chloe’s transition into school and a Green Card in hand, it’s high time for
Gen to pursue something that she had long been passionate about. Bryan is now
the second most knowledgeable person about wine in the house.
Perhaps a newfound career in wine is in her midst…
The family heads to Mexico and Florida to work on their tans, and then back to Lompoc
in June to continue working on Lieu Dit. Raising a family, nurturing a growing winery
and founding a company is not for the faint of heart, but the Mahoneys adjust to
their new normal. Still, a small getaway close to the city might be nice.
After a year of being dogless, Bryan and Gen are introduced to the team at Korean K9 Rescue,
and jump at the opportunity to get involved as fosters. They agree that they aren’t ready to commit
to dog ownership full time, but are eager to help. El, the Jindo Mix, and Chloe have other plans,
and within a few days they plead their case to the agency, begging to let them keep him.
Mission accomplished.
Chloe begins Kindergarten, returning to Carrig Montessori, as one of the older students –
a role she’s relishing. When she’s not milling around Maspeth Avenue, she’s
reconnecting with her roots – in French class and ballet.
After ten years together, countless glasses of wine, a bright and beautiful daughter,
two weddings and a handful of real estate projects along the way, Bryan and Gen purchase
their first ‘house’ in Cold Spring, a small town nestled along the Hudson River.
Weekends are about to get cozier.
